Progressive Registration
A better start.
A closer connection.
Sending money starts with a person. I redesigned onboarding to help people explore the value, understand the next step, and verify their identity before completing a transfer.

01 / Understand the friction
Too much commitment.
Too little context.
The original journey put account creation and identity verification ahead of product value. People faced a substantial commitment before understanding what they could do or why the information was needed.
The experience
A demanding
first encounter.
Registration, verification, and security requirements accumulated at the beginning of the journey.
The trust gap
Sensitive requests.
Limited explanation.
People needed to understand why information was requested and how it related to their next step.
The constraint
Required checks.
Real obligations.
The design had to preserve compliance and security requirements while working within existing platform constraints.
The guiding principle
Earn trust progressively.
Help people understand the value, explain the next step, and request information in a meaningful context.
02 / Redesign the sequence
Let people see the value
before the commitment.
I reframed onboarding around progressive disclosure and earlier product exploration. The sequence changed while required verification remained part of completing a transfer.
Previous journey
Verification upfront
- Open app
- Create account
- Upload ID
- Wait for approval
- Use product
Product value arrived after the initial registration and verification effort.
Progressive Registration
Value earlier
- Open app
- Explore rates
- Enter amount
- Attempt transfer
- Verify identity
- Complete transfer
Verification remained in the journey, with more context before the request.
Simplified sequence redrawn from the flow in my existing MoneyGram case study. It omits branches and exceptions and is not a complete specification of verification policy.
03 / Make the strategy tangible
A clearer reason
for every next step.
The redesign paired lighter initial inputs with progressive disclosure, early product exploration, and explanations around sensitive requests.

Let’s verify

A required step before completing your transfer.
Identity verification supports security and compliance checks.

Illustrative wording, not approved policy copy.
A reason to continue.
Keep a plain-language explanation beside the sensitive request.
New portfolio reconstructions of the documented principles, using fictional people and quote values. Layouts, copy, and pricing are illustrative; these are not historical MoneyGram screens or approved compliance language.
The tradeoff
Reduce the initial burden.
Preserve the required checks.
The opportunity was in sequencing and explanation. Engineering, product, and compliance alignment shaped what the experience could support.
04 / Align around the experience
My design leadership.
Our shared delivery.
I defined the end-to-end experience strategy and drove stakeholder alignment across engineering, compliance, and product. The result depended on work across those disciplines.
My contribution
Frame the
experience strategy.
Connect the onboarding problem to progressive disclosure, clearer expectations, and earlier exposure to product value.
My contribution
Shape the
interaction flow.
Redesign how information collection, product exploration, and verification fit together across the journey.
Cross-functional work
Navigate
the constraints.
Work with product, engineering, and compliance on usability, business requirements, and implementation feasibility.
How this fits my broader MoneyGram role
My role covered money transfers, onboarding, registration, and account experiences. My résumé also describes research, usability evaluation, accessibility advocacy, and design-operations work across that role. This case focuses on Progressive Registration and does not attribute every broader activity to this initiative.
05 / Outcome + reflection
18%
Lower onboarding drop-off
Reported within three months in my résumé and existing case study.
Make progress
feel understandable.
Progressive Registration connected the user’s motivation with the product’s requirements. My contribution was to shape that experience and bring the necessary disciplines into alignment.
- Earlier exploration gave people context for the product’s value.
- Progressive disclosure reduced the initial information burden.
- Explanations connected sensitive requests to a clear purpose.
What I would carry into the next experience
Trust is built through the sequence of an experience as well as its visual design. In a regulated product, clear expectations and a meaningful explanation can be as important as reducing the number of fields.
The 18% figure is a reported project outcome, not an independently audited result. No additional conversion lift, cohort size, or causal experiment result is claimed here.
